A short time ago local riders realised the smorgasbord of potential and began digging the area into the home of national champions. The riding scene in Armidale is extremely accessible with many trails close by and regular events. This is largely due to the thriving local club New England Mountain Bikers (NEMTB) and volunteer members.

Armidale State Forest

An original stronghold, ‘The Piney’ has seen rapid development over the last few years, hosting many successful races. It now lays claim to around 15km of signposted singletrack looping through the roots and rocks of an undulating pine forest.

Fat Tyre Farm

To the north and well above 1000m altitude, Fat Tyre Farm contains some of the sweetest flowing trails in the area, including a mini-downhill run. Riders of all abilities can cruise the ribbon-like ‘Salmon Run’ or practice the skinnies and jumps on ‘Full Bottle’.

Short UNE Trail

A short winding track that loops through field and forest adjacent to the Sport UNE complex. Some singletrack escape and it’s next to a café.

Kookaburra Crest

Kookaburra crest is located on the northern side of town, incorporating a 4X track and some short singletrack into an intense short course.

Getting There

Armidale is located on the New England Highway about five hours from Brisbane and six from Sydney. Kookaburra Crest and UNE tracks are literally in town and the Pine Forest a few kilometres ride north on Rockvale Road. Fat Tyre Farm is 18 km north on the New England Highway.

Technical Nature

Most of the riding is cross-country or trail orientated, incorporating technical wooden and rock features to ensure the fun flows.

Several short downhill lines with more adrenaline inducing gaps and longer enduro style descents also exist in the various locations.

You’ll Need

There are limited facilities at the trailheads so take a hydration pack with tools and spares if you’re planning on being out and about. Anything else you could want is available in town.

Distances

Rides can range from a twenty-minute razz in town or 10km Piney race loop to an all day affair linking up the trail systems with backroads.

Local Knowledge

We prefer to keep it local. But seriously, make contact with local riders to hear about new trails, head to The Goldfish Bowl or Rafters in Guyra for quality food and coffee, and go swimming at the fountain in the mall.

Best Time of the Year

Winter can be quite cold but nothing a few woolies can’t remedy. Pleasant riding conditions most of the year are a highlight of Armidale.
