Fox launch new Float and Float SL
Fox have released two all-new shocks in the Float family - the light weight Float SL and the capable Float.
In recent years we have seen the Fox Float 34, 34 SC, 36 and 40 receive a bevvy of upgrades to dampers and chassis alike, along with the addition of the burly Fox 38. While there have been incremental additions to the Float rear shock range, and important updates, Fox have just released two all-new shocks in the Float range
TESTED: Fox 34 SC | Fox 36 | Fox 38
Float SL – for the racers
All new is the Float SL – light, fast and race ready. It is the smallest and lightest Float rear shock from Fox. Given its intention to grace cross-country and marathon bikes, the unit has been optimised for pedalling efficiency and the demands of XC riding and racing. There's an all-new main piston, valving and an internal floating piston. Fox reckon the damping is more consistent and you therefore get better traction, all while having a wider range of adjustment.
Fox Float – ready to rip
The Float brings a balance of trail riding capability with XC-weight, targeted right at the riders who want a do-it-all trail bike that rips – up and down. It has a firm pedalling platform for efficiency to stomp the climbs, but trail feel that mimics the Float X thanks to a shared damper technology.
Still, it saves 150g over the Float X, in part due to the in-line design that keeps the reservoir internal. A plus for weight and performance, a minus for trail cred looks, if you're that vain. You've got more space in your frame for spares and a cage as well.
Tuning is the name of the game, with 0.1 increment volume spacers and a larger EVOL air chamber which allows for lower pressures and a more linear rate until it ramps up. Fox use a larger piston, internal floating piston and valving for more precise tuning as well. You can get a remote lock out, and the shock uses a two position switch. Of note, in the Open setting the shim stack isn't loaded, for less stress on the unit.
