2025 Transition Regulator: Carbon, mixed-wheel shredder with Bosch SX or CX

All hail the new generation of all-mountain mullet e-bikes!

Transition Bikes have just announced the launch of their new all-mountain workhorse, the Regulator, designed to provide a “fun, nimble and responsive ride”. With a 160/150mm mixed-wheel only platform, Transition promises to balance agility and playfulness, while reducing weight by offering the Regulator with a carbon frame only.

The Regulator will be available with the Bosch CX drive unit for those looking for higher power and longer range, or the Bosch SX drive unit for those who desire a lighter weight experience more similar to a regular mountain bike. With a claimed weight of 18.67kg in the Regulator SX (XT spec), the new Transition looks to be competitive in both weight and spec for those seeking a lightweight e-bike, while the claimed 21.31kg for the Regulator CX (XT Spec) remains reasonable for a full-powered experience. We have been putting the latest generation of the Bosch Performance Line CX drive unit through its paces on the new all-mountain mullet, the Trek Rail+, and we must say that so far we are impressed.

Transition Regulator CX

The Transition Regulator CX features MX wheel set up in sizes from small to XLarge, unlike some other brands who choose to retain 27.5” size for their small frames, also running size specific chainstay lengths (442mm SM/M, 448mm LG/XL) to retain agility across the size range. The bike is set up with 160mm front with a RockShox Domain Gold RC and Super Deluxe on the Shimano Deore model and RockShox Zeb Ultimate and Super Deluxe Ultimate on the XT build.

While the Regulator CX is built with 150mm rear travel, it can extend to 160mm with a 65mm stroke shock if desired.

In terms of Bosch’s Performance Line CX system, the Regulator CX features the System controller on the top tube paired up with the bar-mounted Mini-Remote to deliver 85Nm torque and 600W peak power. Transition have opted to use Bosch’s 625Wh battery on the Regulator, and the bike is compatible with the PowerMore 250Wh range extender in sizes medium and above. 

The Regulator CX also features a geometry adjustment chip at the base of the rear shock, allowing two slightly different ride experiences in one bike.

Several nice-to-have features include an integrated chain guide and chainstay protector.

Transition Regulator SX

The Regulator SX model is a lighter option for those looking for a more acoustic-feeling experience, also featuring MX wheel sizes across the range. Similar to the CX, the SX also uses size-specific chainstays and the Bosch System Controller and Mini Remote drive the Bosch Performance Line CX Drive unit. 

Unlike the Regulator CX, the SX models feature the RockShox Lyrik and Deluxe forks on the two models, paired with RockShox Super Deluxe Select and Ultimate shocks, and rear travel can be increased to 160mm with a 65mm stroke shock as with the Regulator CX.

Where the bikes diverge is with the Regulator SX’s omission of a geometry adjustment chip and the power of the Bosch SX drive unit, offering 55Nm torque compared to the 85Nm of the CX, along with the Bosch CompactTube 400Wh battery.
