Multitools – they will be your best friend, or your worst enemy.

A good multitool can save a ride or race, a poor one could ruin it. Thankfully I have been charged with investigating 15 different tools in an effort to cull some of the guess work in choosing your next trail guardian angel.

Initially, I wanted to rank these in order of desirability. However each tool has its own unique pros and cons with specific riders and workshops in mind. There are several criteria which are consistently targeted in each review, but it’s ultimately up to you, the reader, to decide upon priorities. I have listed the tools on each, and their weight at those links.

While these are a small portion of multitools available, we reached out to all the major distributors in Australia with an opportunity to put forward their top contenders. And so without further ado, here is AMB’s great multitool group test!

In terms of functions per dollar, the Trailside multitool is one of the best value tools on test. This tool hovers beside the Azur AMT-18 in terms of quality and price. The aesthetics are exactly as the brand describes – clean. While the tools don’t pack completely flush with the body, it comes close compared to the chunky Azur competitor and boasts more functions.

One thing I particularly appreciated with the Trailside was that the bit sizes were engraved on each hinge. This eliminated that guessing game when pulling out at least two hex keys before finding the 4mm!

Personally, I prefer elongated multitools as they are easier to handle in tight spots and when reaching between cables. The Trailside is quite wide and square, meaning it’s not a great option for the finer jobs. However, considering its price, this tool has a surprisingly comfortable smooth grip without any harsh edges.

If you find yourself using a chain breaker frequently, or have below-average grip strength, the chain braking function on this tool is not ideal. It took a huge amount of force and protection from trail gloves to break a Shimano 12 speed chain. It’s a budget tool and should be treated as such, but just bear this in mind.

This is perhaps a must-have for any home-workshop or carpark tool box. The Topeak Ratchet has few functions, but it performs each one marvelously. The ratchet design may seem excessive for most, and I wouldn’t recommend carrying it on a ride given how often you actually need a multitool. However I found myself reaching for this little gem every time my bike was in the stand at home.

The included extender makes reaching tight spaces – bottle cage bolts in particular – a breeze. Note the Prestacycles Pocket Ratchet does not include an extender, something which accounts for the price difference. The ratchet itself hastens every job, doing away with twirling tools that come to a frustrating stop when they hit another part. The magnetic bit holder also means you won’t be losing bits to the workshop floor abyss.

The steel parts feel weighty and trustworthy, and we’d expect from an established brand like Topeak. The included tyre levers don’t seem like a necessary inclusion to this tool, but they’re impressively stiff and strong for how small they are. This is all wrapped up in a sturdy Velcro pouch which can be attached to belts or backpacks.

OneUp is a becoming increasingly renowned in the mountain bike scene for their excellent value components and unique tool solutions. Hailing from Squamish, BC, the Canadian brand’s EDC V2 mulitool is part of a family of tools searching for storage solutions. The EDC tool system allows for various ways – such as steerer tubes and hand pumps – in which to store multitools and tyre levers.

The mulitool within the V2 only has 10 functions; however the entire unit boasts up to 20 functions, including a valve core tool, spare rotor bolt, and various spoke keys. It’s quite impressive how all these functions can fit into a steerer tube.

But the most impressive feature of this cylindrical device was the small and unassuming chain breaker. Using the breaker is a two-step process; you must loosen the spare T35 bolt and rotate the tyre lever to expose the breaker. Initially, I had little faith in this plastic tyre lever – combined with a mini tool – providing enough leverage to break a chain. However I was proven wrong as it promptly pushed the chain pin faster than many bigger, burlier tools on test. The OneUp V2 is no gimmick. It’s a high-functioning and strong multi-tool which will integrate seamlessly with your bike.

While comparatively weighty, this is the tool I found myself grabbing to accompany me on most rides. Like all Pedro’s products, the RX20 is refined and precise with a beautiful finish. Pedro’s are renowned in workshops all over the world for their high-quality and reliable workshop tools and greases. Their multitools are designed for the consumer level, and it’s great to see this professional quality trickling down the lineup.

Each of the tools on the RX20 is quite long compared to other tools on test, as is the tool itself. Again, this elongated shape makes accessing tight spaces much easier. Apart from the finish of the tools themselves, the most distinguishable feature of the Pedro’s tools is the ease in which each tool unfolds from the body. It seems superficial but unfolding cheaper tools does feel like nails-on-a-chalk-board compared to Pedro’s. This ease of use can make all the difference when attempting trailside maintenance in the wind and rain.

However, the chain breaker was a disappointment; it does require exceptional force to use, and the leverage provided isn’t quite adequate for the everyday rider.

The included tyre levers are easily removable, but all tools are still accessible with the levers clipped on to either side of the tool. While the RX20 felt slightly too bulky to store in my Trek Slash downtube, I would happily carry it in my cargo bib pocket or tucked inside a frame strap.

The RX Micro 7 is another beautifully finished tool from Pedro’s. It’s one for the minimalists, containing only 7 functions (or 8 if you include the snap-on tyre levers sold separately). It essentially has all the same aesthetic and tactile qualities of the RX20, except in a micro version.

The tool is long enough to provide a nice, ergonomic handle when using each tool. While there’s only 7 functions, it does include a T25 – a useful addition to any multitool. This is really a tool for those prioritising space and weight, while still maintaining a taste for the finer things in life.

Known for creating unique and ingenious cycling products, Prestacycle was established in 2006 in New York, USA. The super light-weight Pocket Ratchet is no exception to this vibrant history. While is serves the same purpose at the Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite DX, it’s far more portable in size and weight. But despite its light weight, it still has a palm-length handle to use the tool with ease.

Again, a ratchet may not be the most practical trail assistant, especially as it doesn’t include a chain-breaker, flathead, or larger sized hex keys. However, it’s a fantastic tool to keep in the car or carry while traveling for bike builds. Ratchet tools really do make things such as stem, rotor, and bidon cage bolts a far less fiddly ordeal than a static tool.

Grooves on the edges of the end bits lock them firmly into the ratchet hole, meaning you’d be hard pressed to lose these. When not in use, they all slide back into the handle. The smooth finished edges of the casing mean this tool would be easily transported any pocket without sharp edges snagging fabric, or tuck neatly into your frame storage compartment.

Fun fact: This lesser-known US brand has been specialising in aluminium since 1989.

Controltech is another brand from the US imported by Link Sports. They produce an impressive array of goods, from bartape to titanium bottle cages. Their 16 function multi-tool is their widest functioning tool on offer, and is comparable to the Birzman 15 Crankbrothers F15 on test.

The 4mm hex is in a conveniently obvious position, and the 5mm is loaded with a 6mm cap. While the bits themselves are very short, the tool is narrow enough to provide a comfortable grip during use. Speaking of comfort, the small chain breaker was surprisingly easy to use on the Controltech!

But the most noticeable feature of the Controltech is how slimline the tool is. In fact, it was the narrowest of all tools which included a chain breaker, and on par with many tools that did not include a chain breaker. For those who want a tool to squeeze into loaded pockets or backpacks, this is an excellent choice.

Azur AMT-18

Azur is synonymous with affordable, no-fuss cycling gear. Distributed by BikeCorp, they touch nearly every accessory imaginable, from pannier racks to arm warmers. They also have a diverse tool repertoire, ranging from 6 function multi-tools to a 15 piece torque wrench set.

Their AMT-18 is quite heavy and unrefined compared to its competitors on test. But for those prioritising functionality over aesthetics and feel, this Azur tool is an excellent choice. In fact, it’s the sheer weight of this tool which enables the chain breaker to work so well; with plenty of leverage behind it, I was impressed with how this budget-conscious tool performed on a 12 speed chain.

While by no means “slim,” the tools to fold inwards towards the center of the tool (in a similar way to the Crankbrothers M13 on test). This means they’re unlikely to provide any discomfort or snag on threads inside your pocket. The bits themselves are long enough to be practical in most situations, and include several sized spoke keys. For 18 functions, the AMT18 does present great value for money, though perhaps not as much as value as the Cleanskin Trailside with 22 functions.

SuperB TB-FD60

SuperB is another brand based out of Taiwan, the industrial epicenter of much of the bike industry. They’ve been around since the early 90s and offer a diverse and relatively budget-friendly range of tools for the home mechanic.

The TB-FD60 is impressively light when considering all the features. The bits have a glossy finish and fold out from the body seamlessly. While I wouldn’t trust the mini tyre levers on double-down casing tyres, they would still work for lighter XC or gravel tyres.

I was excited when the TB-FD60 arrived, as it’s one of few multitools with an integrated CO2 inflator. As inflators are typically small and easily lost, it definitely helps attaching one to a multitool. However, the cage for the inflator is permanently affixed to the multitool and could get in the way during finer jobs. This did cause some minor frustrations when attempting to reach more difficult spots with the phillips and T25.

Birzman Diversity 17

Based out of Taiwan – the manufacturing home of countless bike brands and accessories – Birzman perhaps fly under the radar as a tool brand. However they produce some brilliant products, and have been the recipient of multiple industry awards including a Red Dot award in 2019.

The Diversity 17 multi-tool is exactly what it sounds like – diverse. In fact, this was the only tool on test to possess both a chain breaker and a CO2 trigger. When you include the tyre levers, chain hook, spoke wrenches, and every hex key you would need – this truly is one tool to do it all.

Due to all these functions, the tool itself is quite bulky. However the bits are long enough to remain precise and ergonomic, and the chain tool works. The chain hook is essentially a pin which separates entirely from the tool; this makes it easy to loose, but also easy to use.

While too large to fit comfortably in frame storage or frame/saddle straps, it does fit comfortably in a cargo storage bib pocket. This is one tool I could always depend on. If you’re rushing out the door for a ride, you know the Birzman Diversity 17 will cover you for the vast majority of mishaps.

Birzman Feexman E-Version 15

While Birzman may not come to mind when considering “premium” tool brands, I was so impressed by the quality feel and finish of the E-Version 15. In terms of unfolding and replacing tools, this tool was the closest in feel to the “premium” Pedro’s tools. Like all the tools in their E range, the E-Version 15 is made of chrome-vanadium steel (Cr-V) which should ensure its longevity.

In terms of functions, the E-Version 15 is conventional. It offers the typical hex range, T25, spoke tools, and chain breaker – simple but effective. Given the supreme finish of this multi-tool, it really was a pleasure to use.

When it comes to minimalist tools, I remain unconvinced of their benefit. If your tool lacks so many crucial functions, why carry it at all? However, for those weight and space weenies confident in the condition and tautness of their bike, a handful of functions may be all you need!

As the title notes, the E-Version 5 contains just five functions: 4/5/6mm hex keys, a T25, and a Philips head. Like the other Birzman tools, I was impressed at how well these tools felt and worked. For $24.95 and 58g, this could find a permanent home in your storage tube for those rides on which you forget your main tool.

Crankbrothers M13

Crankbrothers: they’re one of the most recognised names in mountain biking, especially multitools. The M13 is a very popular tool in their lineup, with a lifetime warranty like the rest of them. It’s a very unique shape compared to other multitools on test, as Crankbrothers have opted for circular ergonomics as opposed to the typical square edged grip.

The bits themselves are quite long thanks to its overall length of 89mm. They unfold smoothly and consistently, as you’d expect from this brand. The M13 also includes a plastic case full of tyre plugs and a space to store a spare quick link. The tyre plug case clips firmly onto tool and still allows access to the tools while in place. In fact, this was the only tool on test with an integrated tyre plug set. For those such as myself who always lose their plug kits, this could be a valuable addition to the trail kit.

Crankbrothers F15 Troy-Lee Designs Edition

While expensive compared to other multitools in the 15-function range, the F15 from Crankbrothers was one of the most successful tools on test, for various reasons. Initially, I thought it was merely a handy novelty given its collaboration with a clothing brand, Troy Lee Designs. However this is more than just a limited edition tool for TLD fans.

The entire multitool is sheathed in an alloy case, making it extremely packable and impossible for bits to snag on clothing which inside your pockets. A strong magnet keeps the tool inside this housing, providing a very satisfying ‘plonk’ when inserting the tool. The tool itself has a high-quality and smooth finish, and we’d expect nothing less from this premium brand.

The best part is that the multitool can be used while inside the housing. Simply pull the tool out, select your required bit, and reinsert the tool into the case. A small cutout allows for bits to extrude from the case, while the housing acts as a comfortable and ergonomic handle. It’s a simple and ingenious idea, especially for those prioritising grip and feel.

Because of its case, the Crankbrothers F15 had the most usable chain breaker on test. The case provides so much leverage while twisting the multitool into the breaker, that it barely requires any more effort than a heavy-duty chain breaker tool. After many multitool chain-breakers left my hands red and sore, this was a sweet relief.

Silca Italian Army Knife – Venti 20

Silca is a brand with a strong and loyal following. It has developed a reputation – especially in the pump domain – amongst cycling and tool connoisseurs with an appreciation for fine Italian craftsman ship. Silca is one of the oldest brands in cycling, establishing its roots in Milan in 1917. This multitool is covered by Silca’s famous Lifetime Warranty, including a 7 year warranty on the working order of parts regardless of wear and tear.

So, hype aside, how well does the Venti 20 actually function? While not quite as long as the Pedro’s RX20 or Crankbrothers M13, the bit length is satisfactory in most situations. The multitool is unique in that a beautifully finished magnetic metal plate slides across the face of the tool. This plate triples as a 10mm wrench, valve core remover, and an excellent source of leverage for the effortlessly effective chain breaker.

For the home mountain bike mechanic, it’s important to note that the Silca Venti 20 also provides an 7mm box wrench – perfect for a Shimano caliper bleed nipple. The removable metal plate also acts as a disc pad spacer.

But the real standout feature of the Venti 20 is its ergonomics. This is definitely one of the most comfortable tools to use, thanks to its knurled grip surface – which happens to hide magnetic quick link holders on the inside.

Those who know Silca don’t need to be convinced of the longevity of their products. But for those unphased by marketing and ‘tradition,’ rest assured this is a premium tool relevant to the pragmatic mountain biker.
