FIRST LOOK: AMB Trail and Enduro Tyre Group Test

We've got 24 different trail and enduro mountain bike tyres delivered for our biggest group test yet - here's what we are testing.

Mike Blewitt 28.11.2023

In the search for greater bike handling and performance, we can look to suspension tunes, rider fit, geometry and plenty more. But the fact remains, we only have two contact points with the dirt beneath us – our tyres. Picking the right tyres can have a huge impact on what you get out of mountain biking. Some riders will look to a heavier casing for more support and protection, other riders need faster rolling tyres for their local trails and how they ride. While tyres can cost about $70-$135 each, they are still one of the best value ways to tune in the characteristics of your bike.

There are a number of crowd favourites out there, with justified popularity for how they work across a wide variety of trail conditions. We've had a sample of 26 tyres submitted for this group test, with a focus on trail and enduro tyres. Given all the options in compound, casing and widths for each brand, we are mostly focussing on the most versatile models from each range.

Testers and testing process

We are using four different testers for this project, mostly as long term AMB product testers. Their experience covers local to global level downhill and enduro racing, factory level product testing and development, and bulk hours playing with their personal bike setups to finetune their rides. They are all used to fussing over the finessing, and accustomed to small changes and the impacts they have.

All setups will be tested without inserts, and run at pressures to maintain the ride characteristics needed. Final pressures will be noted for each tyre tested. We'll be looking at what conditions the tyres work best in, and for what type of riding.

We are using DT Swiss wheel sets, both the DT Swiss EX1700 and the FR 1500 between riders. This provides a consistent basis for tyre setup and ride feedback.

Hayden Wright
Hayden will be testing all the Pirelli models, plus Specialized and Good Year models. he will be using his Forbidden Dreadnought in a mullet setup. Hayden will be testing the tyres in south east Queensland, and likely on a Derby trip as well.

Bam da Silva
Another Queensland tester, Bam will be testing the Continental, Bontrager and Michelin tyres on his Pyga enduro bike – and possibly on his trail bike build Norco Revolver.

Ryan Walsch
Ryan is a long-time tester for AMB with decades of experience. Ryan will be testing two Maxxis models and the Vittoria tyres. He may also be on some unreleased rubber. Watch this space. Ryan will be using his Forbidden Druid V2.

Ben Morrison
If Ben hasn't ridden it, it's probably not worth riding. Like Ryan, Ben is based in Canberra, and will be testing between the anti-grip of Mt Stromlo through to secret loam stashes in the hills and visits to Thredbo and Maydena Bike Park. Ben has a full plate with CST, Maxxis and Schwalbe rubber to test. Ben will be using his Pivot Firebird.

Final test results

You can expect to see this in late February, and within issue #208 of AMB – don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss out. We'll have a video review live and a breakdown for each tyre, and which tyres to look for depending on the conditions you ride in.

Pirelli’s range of Scorpion Race tryes come in EN (Enduro) and DH (Downhill) models, with the DualWall or DualWall+ casings respectively. These are overbuilt tyres with the new SmartEvoDH soft compound for all out performance.

Like the rest of their range, Pirelli stick to conditions specific products. The M, or Mixed, is the most versatile tread for use front or rear, although it can be combined with the T (Traction) also on test for bucket loads of late braking traction.

This range has been designed to win World Cups – it is race specific and from our experience on this rubber it is a premium, high performance product.

The T, or Traction, model in the Scorpion Race Enduro range is designed for racing world-level enduro events, specifically as a rear tyre for insane braking traction. A Downhill casing is also available, with the 2x60tpi DualWall+ casing.

This tread design offers tonnes of braking traction with tall edge knobs for off-camber cornering traction. High lines will be your playground, but you can also trim some of the knobs for courses that need more rolling speed.

We have partnered the T with the M tread pattern in other tests to great effect. A Soft conditions tread pattern is also available – shortly.

The Pirelli Scorpion Enduro range has treads for Mixed conditions (M, as shown here) Soft conditions and a Rear specific tread. Here at AMB we have spent a fair bit of time on the different iterations since launch, and the current Mixed conditions Scorpion Enduro tyre is very versatile, thanks to coming in so many casing options – as outlined via Hayden’s test last summer.

The Mixed conditions tyre is the most versatile and suits front or rear use. The HardWall casing is their strongest casing. The SmartGrip Gravity rubber isn’t as soft as their latest rubber on the Scorpion Race tyres, and instead has a much longer wear life – although it is grippier than the first release Enduro range in 2021.

The rear specific treads in the Pirelli Scorpion Enduro line are designed to be fast rolling while still offering excellent braking and accelerating traction. To this end you can see the chamfered leading edge of the centre knobs, but with a more pronounced trailing edge for braking traction.

The SmartGrip single compound is slower wearing and faster rolling than the Gravity version used on the Mixed conditions tyre, to get better tread wear and better rolling speed. You can expect a long tread life from this rear-specific tyre.

From: Specialized.com

Specialized have been making tyres for eons, and they have continued to progress their range. The Butcher GRID Trail is a versatile trail tyre, with aggressive tread for confidence in a wide variety of conditions. The tread blocks are ramped for improved rolling resistance, and siped to get more traction on more terrain types. The T9 compound is the softest compound from the Specialized range.

The GRID Trail casing is based on a 60tpi carcass, for improved pinch flat protection and prevention of sidewall cuts. While the tyre is listed at 2.3″, it still inflates as wide as some of the 2.4″ rubber on test.

RRP: $80
From: Specialized.com

The Eliminator is more designed for hardpack and loose over hard, and with the T7 compound it is faster rolling than the Butcher with T9 – as such, this will be tested on the rear for this tyre test.

The GRID Trail casing is all about support and puncture resistance, but the overall design should be an ideal pairing with a Butcher front for a strong and agile trail tyre setup.

Good Year are one of many big names in tyres who have jumped into cycling. The Newton range is their gravity tyre, and the Newton MTF is designed as a front tyre, and this model has a heavy duty enduro casing.

Visually, it is a beast, with a robust enduro casing that is super stiff in the hand. There are also trail and downhill casings to suit different rider’s needs. The open tread design should clear well and the tall edge knobs should find support in a wide range of loose conditions.

The Newton MTR is designed to match the MTF as a rear-specific tyre. Like the MTF you can get the tyre in trail, enduro or downhill casings. We have the enduro on test, which has 2x120tpi layers plus a full butyl insert for even more protection.

The tread has very tall edge knobs to find secure grip in loose conditions – although it is a squarer profile so may let go at an aggressive lean angle. The centre tread has broad paddles to dig in under braking or accelerating, This is a design we see on a few rear-specific tyres, so the trail time will tell us who and what use it suits.

Continental completely overhauled their trail and gravity tyre line up, and out of the ashes came a range of tyres dedicated to enduro, downhill and trail riding. They have different treads, different compounds and different casings.

The Kryptotal range has front and rear specific tread patterns – the front is shown here with the soft compound. The casing has three layers on the sidewalls and two on top for a very supportive casing – with the rubber and tread pattern ready to find the traction.

The matching rear to the Kryptotal Fr tyre, this is matched in a 2.4″ size. Like other rear specific tyres we see edge knobs that are a bit closer together and quite tall, and broad centre tread to ensure lots of braking and accelerating traction.

That’s not to say there isn’t a lot more going on, with an incredible amount of siping and shaping on the tread knobs, plus a specific enduro casing and of course the soft compound model we have on test. These are a high performance set of tyres and our expectations are suitably high.

This is an aggressive tread design for trail and enduro use. The 50a rubber walks the line between tacky and fast wearing and being durable and fast rolling. The tread pattern cuts a traditional look, with twin centre tread and meaty edge knobs. They tread has slightly lower height than some, allowing for faster rolling speeds.

Bontrager use their 120tpi Core Strength casing for protection, however it remains an easy tyre to fit to the rim, unlike some.

The Bontrager SE6 Team Issue takes the SE5 and turns it up a notch – it cares little for rolling speed and is instead focussed on traction in all conditions. To this end the tread is deeper and more aggressive, with more siping and shaping to find an edge on almost any trail, at any angle.

The Core Strength casing remains the same as does the TM Grip rubber. For this test this tyre will pair well with the SE5 on the rear, but both treads can be used both front or rear.

Michelin know rubber and pneumatic tyres, and their Wild Enduro range have been very popular. They have a front and rear specific model line up, matching the right kind of rubber, casings and tread patterns for specific uses.

The front has open tread to ensure grip in a wide range of conditions, and the casing has upto 4 plys of material, aiming to provide protection and support no matter the speed or size of impact.

The matching partner to the Wild Enduro Front, the rear takes extra emphasis on rear-specific traction, with a different rubber and casing optimised for the use and abuse that a rear enduro tyre receives.

While the tread is still open, the trailing edge is aggressive for lots of traction under braking, meaning you can grab a handful of brake and make sure it has the impact you need. These come well-regarded so we will see how they stack up.

Vittoria have a wide range of tyres for mountain bikes, but the new Mazza Race is part of a recent development of tyres designed specifically for enduro use.

Vittoria mix a 60tpi casing for robust strength, and a soft compound with mixed height rubber – a combination that is said to find traction in all conditions. We haven’t spent much time on Vittoria rubber, but these feel very secure on setup and the open tread looks like it will find lots of traction.

The Martello Race takes the design, rubber and casing of the Mazza but optimises the tread for faster conditions – hardpack and more solid surfaces. This tyre is going to be at home on your meaty flow trails, away from mythical loam and more on the typical hardpack Australian conditions.

The square knobs are stout but with so much shaping that they will find the right blend of mix on rock as they will on trails where they can pierce the surface to get an edge in. They could be an ideal Australian conditions tyre, or a faster rolling rear to a meatier front.

The Maxxis Assegai comes equipped on countless trail, enduro and eMTBs in Australia. The top MaxxGrip 3C compound with DD casing is known to grip like baby poo on a picnic rug, with a stout casing to shrug off whatever you can throw at it. There are lighter casings available for those who need more compliance and lighter weight.

The tread setup is nothing short of meaty, and you’ll primarily see the Assegai as a front tyre with something faster rolling in the back – but it is by no means front specific. The Assegai offers gobs of traction wherever you put it.

The Minion name is a household favourite for mountain bikers around the world. The DHR II comes in casings for trail, enduro and downhill use, and we have the DD casing on test for brutish use.

Some of the features are similar to the iconic DHF, with a few changes to assist with better support in the edge knobs. Many will run it as a rear specific tyre but it can be run front and rear as well.

The Maxxis Dissector is said to be Troy Brosnan’s go to tyre. Whether it is or not is upto you – but it sure is a good tyre for a lot of Australian conditions.

The Dissector suits dry conditions and some say it is best as a rear tyre, but it is frequently fitted both front and rear on many bikes as stock – just not often in the 3C MaxxGrip DD compound and casing setup we have here. This will be a fast and strong tyre in the test.

Most people will have heard of or ridden the Maxxis Minion DHF. Somewhere someone will have compiled how many World Cup podiums and top results this tread has scored – we’d wonder if any other tread tops it.

We have the top spec 3C MaxxGrip compound on test with the stout DD casing, this is perfect for enduro and eMTB use, although trail riders may prefer an EXO+ casing to drop some weight and gain some compliance.

Tyres make a big difference but they can still really add up as a consumable. Enter CST, giants in the manufacturing space, and capable of delivering good tyres at great prices. Case in point – the Gravateer.

This one is aimed at Downhill use, and with a favourable price they may be just the ticket for bikepark riders. The strong casing supports a fairly familiar tread layout – and at 1500g you can expect these to stand up to a lot, but not be so friendly on the pedal ups.

The CST BFT is the trail option for those who want a high value tyre. This is the cheapest tyre on test, but it suits a wide variety of conditions. Be it loose over hard, medium or even wet conditions according to CST.

The 2.4″ model supplied has a firm casing for trail use, but you can get 2.25″ models as well, a good fit for older bikes or frames with limited clearance.

Schwalbe’s new Tacky Chain tread pattern was developed in the Downhill World Cup, but moves across disciplines to be in our test here in a Super Trail casing with Addix Soft rubber.

Tall tread on the edge knobs should provide gobs of traction in loose conditions, with plenty of room for crud to clear out of the tread. Lots of ramping and siping will keep it rolling as fast as possible while keeping an edge in when needed.

The Super Trail casing has proved to be a versatile casing for aggressive trail riding – so we are keen to get this tread on the trails.

The Hans Dampf tread pattern has been around a long time, but it still keeps on delivering. The tread is fairly open while the shoulder knobs still stand tall enough to find grip as required.

The rounder profile should have great transition feel on the trail and the Super Trail casing will find support for aggressive trail use.
