FIRST LOOK: Dakine Bike Roller Bag

Dakine are well-known for their luggage and sweet trail gear, like the kit that Ben Morrison has tested in Issue 166 of AMB. But their luggage range also includes a sweet bike bag, and it's one that can swallow a downhill bike, enduro bike, or even a fat bike!

 

The bag is essentially a soft bag with a firm base and two wheels at one end. Not quite a bath tub base like the Thule RoundTrip Traveler we tested a couple of years back, and the bike doesn't secure in place with an axle mount like that model or the upmarket RoundTrip Pro we have also reviewed.

But I'm not sure that's a problem, it makes the bike bag a lot more versatile, a bit lighter, and easier to store when at home. Plus at $550 it's cheaper than those two models.

The bag has a padded wheel bag inside, a tool roll, a sleeve for your fork, a block for the back end to sit on, a disc sleeve, and a wrap for the top tube that also secures the handlebar. So once packed, your bike isn't rattling around and getting damaged.

The bag looks fairly compact and I was surprised it could fit a large fat bike in, and I think the Dakine Bike Roller Bag would have no problems swallowing a downhill bike or big enduro sled. The little additions like the tool roll and disc sleeve were a great addition.

We've got a little more playing to do with the Dakine Bike Roller Bag but so far it's hitting the numbers, coming in below 8kg, being not so big it can't load into a taxi, and not being too close to a grand to take it home.
