FIRST LOOK: Funn Ripper pedals

Funn hit the pedal market with another clipless offering.

AMB Magazine 07.03.2018

Earlier this year we were sent a number of sample items from Funn MTB, including the Ripper, their double-sided platform clipless pedal.

This style of pedal is popular with beginners, trail riders and gravity riders alike, thanks to the generous platform size and dual-sided options. You don't need to look down to clip in, and there is a sense of surefootedness if you miss the mark, thanks to the platform.

But the needs of a beginner and a gravity rider are pretty diverse. Most experienced riders, regardless of what they ride, want a firm connection with a pedal that they clip in to. And with the included studs, you can do just that with the Funn Ripper.

Fit the studs in to grip into your shoe, and you move from a fairly friendly and sturdy trail pedal to something that will hold on like a rabid dog. The cleat tension is still adjustable, but by changing the interface with your pedal and shoe, you can really feel locked in.

The platform is 21mm high, which isn't overly big or small. Claimed weight is 570g for a pair, we clocked 278g per pedal so that seems about right.

We need to fit the cleats up and check with we're after a feel of pins or no pins, but watch out for a full review once we have plenty of trail time on these pedals.
