“Don’t think twice, just sign up. It’s a great day out for everyone.”

That’s the advice from Australian cycling legend Robbie McEwen for anyone thinking about taking part in the Spring Cycle in Sydney on October 15. McEwen will be involved in the event once again this year and knows the big thrill for many riders will be crossing the famous Harbour Bridge free of cars.

And with a variety of different routes on offer – from 10km all the way through to 105km – there really is something for everyone in your family to enjoy.

Three-time Tour de France green jersey winner McEwen can’t wait to see thousands of people, both young and old, getting out on their bike and perhaps learning something new about the city.

“Riding across the Sydney Harbour Bridge without any traffic is pretty special and everyone will get a kick out of that,” he says. “And Bicycle NSW have put on an option for everyone so that anyone can get involved and it’s great that Spring Cycle have made a really big effort to include everybody.

“Anyone can ride 10km and there’s also the lure of signing up for one of the longer rides. Some people might be a bit hesitant if they haven’t done an event like this before, but I can assure them there is every level of rider out there from absolute beginners to former pros and elite riders.

“It’s not a race, you’re not trying to keep up with anybody, it does not matter how fast or how slow you are – and you’ll be guided the whole way through. There’s water stops, there’s marshals out there, it’s very safe. It’s a great experience just to get out and give it a go.

“I’ve not spoken to anybody at the end of the ride who’s said they were sorry they did it. Everybody loves it.”

As well as the rides themselves, the Spring Cycle promises to be a real festival of the sport with crit racing, bike polo, unicycling and even speed dating featuring over the weekend. On top of all that, there will be two finish-line parks set up (at Pirrama Park and Cathy Freeman Park) packed with food and drinks stalls, entertainment and exhibitions.

If you want to get on your bike and get involved then don’t delay. Standard entry prices are only available up to midnight on September 30 – but children aged up to 16 ride for free as long as they are accompanied by a paying adult.
