After Crankworx Rotorua, AMB and the rest of the worlds media were secreted away to Specialized temporary New Zealand HQ just outside of Rotorua. There, the covers were lifted off an all new Stumpjumper FSR alongside a new addition to the range the Rhyme, a womens specific bike. Here’s the official low down on these impressive new models.

Stumpjumper FSR

First debuted in 1981, the Stumpjumper FSR has come a long way, to become possibly the best trail bike ever. This year, it features the shortest chainstays of any trail bike out there, an even slacker, trail-eating geometry, proprietary Rx shock tune, 650b and 29-inch options and never before done, fully integrated SWAT technology (See Below). The result? Remarkable handling, enhanced climbing efficiency, and unparalleled utility. It’s the trail legend reborn.

SWAT Compartment

Featured on both the Rhyme and Stumpjumper FSR, the groundbreaking new SWAT Compartment provides an easily accessible storage solution tucked away discreetly inside the bike’s down tube. Which means you now have the freedom to leave that clumsy backpack or fanny pack at home. SWAT carries everything you need, right where you need it.

Rhyme

The rider’s needs are always at the forefront of everything that Specialized makes, with the Rhyme being one of the greatest realizations of this philosophy. To make it the best trail bike for women, a focus was not only placed on what trail riding demands, but what a female trail rider actually needs to have the best possible experience. This means looking at the bike as a complete system, including geometry, suspension and the key touch points.

Throughout extensive testing, female trail riders told Specialized that its proven Trail Geometry delivered the most control and confidence for aggressive trail riding, which is why the Stumpjumper FSR and Rhyme share the same geometry. Specialized’s in-house suspension team dialed-in the Rhyme’s suspension with an exclusive Women’s Rx Trail Tune shock that enables female trail riders to use the full suspension stroke. This means that it delivers a plush and lively suspension feel throughout. Not stopping there, every touch point was refined in order to fit a female rider, including the ergonomically designed and scientifically-tested Body Geometry Myth saddle. Narrower handlebars are also included to complement women’s physiology, while size-specific crankarm lengths match a woman’s pedaling style. Combined, these measures ensure optimal efficiency, greater comfort, and confident handling. In short, Specialized went all-out to make the best women’s trail bike out there.

6Fattie / 27+

Specialized will offer both the Rhyme and the Stumpjumper in a range of carbon and alloy models, with price points that shouldn’t blow out the average riders wallet. In addition Specialized will offer 6Fattie. Altered stays and matching 27+ componentry mean this isn’t just a beefed up Stumpjumper or Rhyme, this is the real deal. The highlight of course is the semi fat, 6 Fattie tires.

6 Fattie has been developed for increased traction and flotation, resulting in more control and speed for the rider. With 6Fattie tires, riders can run lower air pressures, resulting in a 69% increase in tire contact patch. Additionally, the tire volume has been increased by 56%, absorbing bumps with less feedback and without slowing down the rider. Whilst you can read a more detailed review of our time on the Rhyme and Stumpjumper FSR in issue 148 of AMB, unfortunately it was still to early for a ride on the 27+ versions. However we are just as eager as you are to sample the goods.

For more info check out AMB issue 148 for our opinion and full rundown.
