TESTED: Bontrager Rally with Mips

Bontrager helmets have been on the market for a few years now but I hadn’t tried one on up until a few weeks ago. Now I am wondering why that was.

The sleek looking trail helmet is available in 3 sizes ranging from 51-64cm offering good cross over between the sizes for a proper fit. The medium size for my 59cm head was perfect, the MIPS insert coupled with the “Headmaster” retention system cradling my head snuggly and securely. They’re available in Black, green and blue.

The MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) technology is a system developed by neurosurgeons and scientists, the technology was created to reduce rotational forces on the brain caused by angled impacts to the head achieved through the use of their distinctive floating (yellow) liner. Many helmets are coming in MIPS versions as well as standard models. MIPS models do cost more – but what price are you putting on your head these days?

Weighing in at just over 400 grams it is comparable to other trail helmets on the market. Airflow through the helmet is above average thanks to the large vents across the front and deep channeling on the internal side of the helmet. This is a pleasant surprise with the move towards the more robust trail helmets normally sacrificing breathability in their quest for burliness. Bontrager have struck a good mix with the Rally.

Glasses fit unimpeded under the shell with no annoying restrictions behind the ears that pushes glasses into weird positions and creates pressure points. Also for the most fashion conscious, the helmet straps sit flat against the face, so the glasses arms sit unimpeded on the outside so everyone can see the brand of your shades. Goggles also work well, fitting snuggly in place even without a retaining clip the strap stayed in place throughout the test. A cool little feature is that the visor can be pushed back to allow room for the goggles to sit up top when not in use. I found this to be super handy for the times between descents as I could easily pop them up where they are still accessible and secure but most of all stopped them from fogging up. A real plus for anyone riding with goggles with an open face helmet like this.

This is a lid that takes it to the big helmet manufacturers. A good fitting, good looking helmet featuring MIPS technology at a very reasonable $189. If you are in the market for a new lid The Rally MIPS is worthy of serious consideration.
