TESTED: Fizik Gobi M5 VS mountain bike saddle

Fizik are well-known in the world of bike saddles, and their Versus range adds a different fit option to their popular Gobi saddle.

Fizik's Versus, or VS, range of saddles take popular models, and runs a shannel down the middle of them. Love it or hate it yourself, this is the kind of change that can make a huge diffference in comfort for some riders, relieving pressure on the perineum.

The Gobi is a very traditionally shaped saddle (VS channel notwithstanding) with a rounded back so you can easily get off the back of the seat, a dropped and rounded nose with some more padding so climbing in a forward position isn't uncomfortable, and your shorts don't get hooked.

The shell is carbon reinforced nylon, with some grooves in the edged at the mid point, called 'Wing Flex'. This is the area of the saddle that a working hamstring pushes against, and the shell can now flex a bit more to allow for more comfort in the pedal stroke.

Fizik use their K:ium rails on this model. They're a strong rail that are totally round, and the saddle is still a respectable 220g, without resorting to elongated carbon rails which can reduce compatibility with seatposts.

The markings on the rails really help get your setup right too.

The Gobi VS is a good update on a classic. I found it easy to get along with, possibly even better than the original. The shape and level of padding makes it good for a trail bike or all-mountain rig – but it's light enough to keep XC and enduro racers happy too.

The VS model may not work for everyone, some riders find the channel too pronounced. Most Fizik dealers have a few test saddles, so it's worth dropping in to a shop to see if you can try before you buy.
