TESTED: Funn Zippa lite chain guides
A chain guide is the ultimate security when you're racing against the clock and we have the low down on some of the latest and lite'st from Funn.

Given push bikes are based on pedalling a chain over gears, chain security is king when it comes to function. With a front derailleur, thrown chains were normally the sign of poor front derailleur setup, or excessive chain ring or chain wear. Or just getting too out of shape. But with 1x drivetrains, part of that security is lost. Even with narrow-wide chain rings and clutch rear derailleurs, it is possible to throw a chain. Fitting a chain guide becomes an easy insurance policy, especially if you’re riding against the clock.
Funn’s Zippa Lite range have a direct mount type top guide, an S3 mount top guide, or an ISCG05 type guide with bash guard. We tested the D-type and ISCG05 mount.
Fitting for both is relatively straightforward, with shims used behind the guide to achieve the right position for your chain line. The black anodized aluminium looks good on just about any bike, and the bash guard for the larger guide is available in two sizes, to suit your chain ring size.
In use, the guides did what they said. They were mostly unobtrusive, although it takes some finer setup to make sure there is no chain rub in the limits of your range. I did once have the chain come off the ring with the rear wheel out – and could only get it back on by loosening the bolt for the guide and refitting it. A frustrating occurrence, but a one-off.
All in all, the Zippa Lite range are a no-fuss guide using a basic and secure design. I won’t be taking mine off any time soon.
