The Australian Open Downhill race is doubling up as Downhill Nationals this year, but first riders needed to seed themselves before the final showdown on Saturday. Being an already prestigious event, the prospect of green and gold jerseys has drawn thick competition this year to a stacked field. International riders have also joined in on the action, with the Santa Cruz Syndicate and Dorval Commencal teams bringing their best and brightest riders.

The track was about 5 minutes long for the fastest riders, an all out test of strength and endurance through bomb holes, braking ruts, and the infamously raw rock gardens. After practicing all week – or racing the other Cannonball Festival events – many riders were already fatigued coming into the biggest test of the week. Some wanted to just safely get down the hill today and live to see the final tomorrow; others wanted to make a point that they were here for business.

After carrying an air of confidence about all week, Sian laid down a razor sharp run and put 7 seconds into the next contender, none other than Nina Hoffman. The young Lia Ladbrook was the next Aussie down the list in 4th place.

In the men’s, the bookie’s favourite Luke Meier-Smith suffered a mechanic and has seeded 5th last. Meanwhile, his younger brother Remy was a sight to behold as he floated down the course to finish 2nd behind Canadian superstar Jackson Goldstone.

Of course, none of the international riders will claim the green and gold jersey this weekend. The title of National Champion will be awarded to the fastest finishing Australia. However bodies will still be put on the line for a medal and cash prize of up to $5000.

Full seeding results can be found here, and we’ll be bringing you all the coverage from finals soon!
