MTBA announce Junior World Champs Squad!
World Championships are in Lenzerheide, Switzerland this year and MTBA have just announced the Junior team.
The Mountain BIke World Championships are approaching – they are less than 3 months away! Worlds were in Cairns in 2017 and they rocked. In 2018, the big show heads to Lenzerheide, Switzerland. We have just booked some accommodation to watch the action as ther world's best duke it out to claim XC and DH world titles, and Mountain BIke Australia have just announced who will be contesting the Junior World Championships for Australia.
As we saw in the National Series and National Championships – our Junior scene is strong.
Sixteen cross-country and downhill riders will be flying the flag for Australia in Lenzerheide.
Seven riders were selected in the cross-country team including current Junior Men’s World Champion Cameron Wright, Matthew Dinham who finished in the top 10 at last year’s World Championships as well as Teagan Atherstone, competing at her second World Championships. Making their debut will be Sam Walsh, Corey Smith and Zoe Cuthbert the reigning Australian junior women’s champion.
“I’m really looking forward to racing in Europe in the weeks leading into the World Championships where I will be defending my stripes”, Wright commented. “And of course excited to be part of another strong team representing Australia.” Wright has already flown to Europe, and will be racing this weekend and also spending time in Livigno to train at altitude.
Kye A’Hern has won two downhill Junior World Cup rounds this year at Fort William and Leogang and Ellie Smith who finished fifth in the junior women at the 2017 World Championships.
A’Hern will be making his World Championship debut along with four other riders Aaron Gungl, Nik Barber, Cooper Downey and Jacob Frauenfelder.
“It’s an exciting time in our junior ranks with some great talent coming through and producing results on the world stage," said MTBA CEO Shane Coppin. “We want the riders to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the experience at every level,” he said.
Due to school commitments a number of eligible athletes did not accept their nomination in the Australian team.
