Customising your Fox Suspension Fork

The suspension on your mountain bike is not meant to be ‘set and forget’ – it works much better when it has been adjusted for your weight and riding style.

The suspension on your mountain bike is not meant to be ‘set and forget’ – it works much better when it has been adjusted for your weight and riding style. More than that, it works better again when it’s properly maintained and serviced.

With Fox Suspension introducing a seven step trail adjustment CTD damper for 2015, and seven sweet new sticker kits with retro graphics, it seemed like a good time to breathe some new life into my 2014 Fox Float 32 CTD forks.

Fox Float CTD

The forks were sent to the Fox Service Centre at Sola Sport (Regents Park, NSW). I spoke to their head honcho Simon about what I wanted for the fork – beyond some well overdue TLC after the past few months of riding and racing in less than bluebird conditions.

While I love having the CTD options, sometimes the trail settings felt a little far between. This is most apparent in a stage race, when fatigue builds up over the days or week, or more. At that point, I barely run lockout, or even run the fork in the Trail setting. But the new damper allows for some more precise options.

The forks came back feeling nice and squishy, cleaner than I’d seen them in months, and with a few more clicks in the Trail adjustment below the CTD blue switch. It is taking a few rides to get the feel for it, but I’ve settled on running my forks two clicks in on Trail, which helps maintain the ride height, and stops diving through travel in corners.

Green Fox stickers

I much prefer to leave my forks open than locked, “I would have made that section if my fork was locked out!” Said no one. Ever. So this position feels great. Next stop with my mountain bike is Cairns, for the start of the Crocodile Trophy. Having a new tune on the my fork before 9 days of mountain bike racing is a gift! IMG_3985

The last step was left to me. New stickers. I’m not great with spatial awareness, but managed to make some references on the fork for where the stickers should line up, and if you squint and don’t look directly at it (similar to looking at the sun) you’d think I’d done an ok job. There are a few colour choices to choose from – and I went with a fluoro green. It doesn’t match my bike, but it looks awesome!
