English Wins Fifth Consecutive Solo World 24 Hour Mountain Bike Title in Scotland

Australia's Jason English has won the World Endurance Mountain Bike Organisation (WEMBO) Solo 24 Hour Championship title for the fifth consecutive time over the weekend in Fort William, Scotland.

Australia’s Jason English has won the World Endurance Mountain Bike Organisation (WEMBO) Solo 24 Hour Championship title for the fifth consecutive time over the weekend in Fort William, Scotland.

There are few, if any challenges in sport more difficult than racing a mountain bike over tough terrain for 24 hours, and English is without doubt the premier athlete for the sport on the planet.

Racing up against competitors from over 25 countries, English went with his tried-and-true formula of staying with his competition for the first half of the race and then pulling away to build a lead in the dark hours overnight. In the early hours of Sunday, English had English racer Ant White closing in, but with a customary late race surge, English extended his lead again.

He would carry this gap on to complete another outstanding win in an amazing career, racing 26 laps of the tough course for a total ride distance of 348.4 kilometres.

Australia also took the gold in the Men’s Single Speed category, with Brett Bellchambers winning, completing 24 laps in the 24 hours while riding a bike with only a single gear. Brett finished 7th overall.

The Oceania region can claim dominance in the sport with Kim Hurst (NZ) taking out the Elite Female title.

English has a punishing campaign of events each year and will now carry his always excellent form into his defence of the Australian title in Mt Annan, NSW on November 29 &
