Fizik's new Vento Proxy XC and gravel shoe

Fizik's new Vento Proxy brings a super light and breathable shoe into the XC and gravel arena.

Fizik have expanded their Vento range with the new Vento Proxy, a light weight gravel and mountain bike shoe that is, according to Fizik, 'developed for competitive riders seeking race-ready features and efficient power transfer on unpaved roads.'

With a 44.5EU sample having just arrived, it is easy to see just how airy this lightweight shoe is. With a tear resistant PU laminated mesh upper, you can just about see through the shoe from one side to the other. Great for those rides with lots of creek crossings – as long as it isn't in the depths of winter!

Spot the light in the toe box, thanks to the PU laminated mesh upper.

Fizik match the upper to fiber composite sole rated '8' for stiffness, which is quite stiff compared to shoes like their Terra Ergolace trail shoe, but not as crazy as their stiffest XC racing shoes like the Vento Ferox, which scores a 10/10 for stiffness.

The outersole has full rubber coverage, including on the instep for a teeny bit more grip when scrambling over logs or unrideable features. There's room for toe spikes if those are your jam, with soft rubber right at the tip of the toe for some series traction if you need to run up something too steep to ride.

The snazzy upper is secured via a single Li2 BOA dial. The lacing is offset and so is the tongue, to help match the shape of your forefoot. With a nice neoprene like lining inside the cuff of the shoe, it is very comfortable with no pressure points – this could even win favour for those XTERRA types who might ride without socks!

With a little more give in the toes than the Vento Ferox, and a confirmed weight of just over 360g per shoe in size 44.5EU, these could be the perfect shoe for those looking for a light shoe that is stiff, but still has some feel to it when off the pedals: marathon racers, stage racers, XCO racers and gravel riders alike, this may be the shoe for you.

I'll get some cleats fitted up and have a long term review in a coming issue.
