It isn’t a big secret, but Fox have launched a new 32 model fork for 2017 (yes it’s still April 2016) – the 32 Step Cast. It’s the lightest cross-country fork Fox have ever produced, deisgned around 100mm of travel, and using a Step-CAst (SC) lower leg design and crown spacing to shave weight, but maintaining stiffness with the 32mm upper legs.
At a claimed weight of 1.355kg (27.5″) or 1.36kg (29″) they are seriously light – and just what Fox backed racers will appreciate in an Olympic year. The fork is available in 27.5 or 29″ models, with 15QR Boost or 15QR 100mm options using the Kabolt axle.
Equipped with the awesome FiT4 damper and 3 position GRIP adjuster as on the 2016 32, the Factory series forks also have the Kashima Coat, and are available in gloss orange, matte black or gloss white.
Starting at 2.98 pounds, the 32 Step- Cast (SC) fork is our lightest cross- country fork ever. Optimized for 100 mm of travel, the Step-Cast lower leg design and narrow crown spacing save weight while the 32 mm upper tubes maintain FOX ride quality.
The shape of the lower leg design isn’t just for looks. The 32 SC chassis uses a narrow stance to save weight and the step design makes room for the spokes and brake rotor. The 32 mm upper tubes and ample bushing overlap maintain a quality ride and the hollowed out lower legs provide even more weight savings.
Spacing between the upper legs is 120mm compared to 130 for a standard 32 model, which puts maximum tyres size at 2.3″. The 27.5″ fork can take a 180mm rotor as the biggest, while the 29″ can take a 203mm – which is huge for an XC fork. The 27.5″ model will come in just a 44mm offset, but the 29″ will be available in both 44mm or 51mm offset – perfect for G2 bikes in the Trek family – or just easing the handling of some overly whippy XC bikes.
While the FiT4 damping remains essentially the same, the GRIP damper uses the FIT sealed cartridge technology combined with a coil-sprung, independent floating piston. GRIP allows excess oil to purge through specially designed ports at the top of the damper to maintain consistent damping and increase durability.
Performance Series forks will provide Open, Medium, and Firm modes with additional micro-adjust between settings.
Australia should see forks arriving by June, but you can pre-order via your Fox dealer. RRP is expected to be $1450.
