Mount Joyce Bike Track
Some of the riding in South East Queensland is known first hand, or by reputation.
Some of the riding in South East Queensland is known first hand, or by reputation. Mt Joyce may well fall into both categories, but as it is a recently built facility the riding experienced there could be limited to racing, and local riders.
The 2011 Australian XCM Championships were held at Mt Joyce, just before the park was opened. Everyone was blown away by the trails that had been built – and the climbing that was hidden!
These trails are purpose-built, and while there are some mountainbike- specific trails, there are other multi- purpose trails too. Mt Joyce was planned to offer something a little different to other recreation areas nearby, and also offers water sports, horse riding trails, bushwalking trails, campsites and play equipment.
There are about 40km of trails to use, with 25km of these being mountainbike specific IMBA standard singletrack. Pure bliss!
There are ‘Double Black Diamond’ trails on the site, but these are only open for events. Even without those trails open, there is enough variety for beginners through to the most advanced riders.

Getting There
Mt Joyce is about one hours drive South West from Brisbane, located between Boonah and Beaudesert. Funnily enough, it’s off the Beaudesert- Boonah Road at Wyaralong. It’s also easy to access from Ipswich or the Gold Coast.
Technical Nature
As stated above, there is some serious trail here, but that won’t all be open outside of events. Trails are built to the IMBA guidelines and with sustainability in mind, follow the grading system to match your ability to the trails.
You’ll Need
As with any ride, a bike in good working order is a must. The climbing and descending on offer if you move beyond the lakeside trail will challenge the rider and their equipment. There are trails for all mountainbikes and general trailbikes – but the downhill runs (when open) require a specific bike to ride them.
Distances
Most of the trails link together, especially the beginner and intermediate trails. You will be able to make loops from a few kilometres long that are quite flat, to more challenging loops up to 30km. The maps are available to download, so plan your route and get riding.
Local Knowledge
Wyaralong Dam may look inviting but swimming isn’t permitted. Fishing without a permit is, however. So throw your gear in the car to see if you can catch a meal after your ride.
Best Time of Year
It’s Queensland. Summer is hot and typically dry. The trails are all within a catchment area for the dam, so after heavy rain you would be best to avoid it.
