QLD State XCO Champs head back to Mackay
If you do a good job, you typically get the gig again... and that is exactly what has happenned for Mackay. They ran a great XCO Championships for Queensland in 2016, and are set to do it all again in 2017.
In 2017 the Queensland state XCO (cross-country Olympic) titles will head back to Mackay, and will be held across the weekend of 30th September to 1st October 2017.
Mackay and District Mountain Bike Club will hold the event at Rowallan Park with support from Mackay Regional Council and Visit Mackay, the local tourism board.
Club President Iain Masters said the club is excited about hosting an MTBA approved state event and expect large numbers to compete on a course, which navigates is way through lush tropical rainforest and is only a short distance from the main city centre.
"There has been an immense amount of work that has gone into the course and planning over the last few years," he said. "An extra portion of climbing has been added to this year’s course, short but very sharp. It is a full on, intense trail with a fast pace, and not much rest
space."
Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said it was fantastic news that Mackay had been chosen as the host region for the 2017 Queensland XCO State Championships.
“Council supported the 2016 state titles here through our Invest Mackay Events Attraction Program,’’ Cr Williamson said. “Held over the long-weekend in October, they were a tremendous success, and it is great to see this event returning to Mackay this year,” he said.
“These championships attract mountain bike riders from throughout the state, which provides an economic boost for our region.”
The championships will coincide with the River to Reef Charity Ride and a night-time criterium through the city centre under lights. Rowallan Park is located just 10 kilometres north west of the Mackay CBD and is easily accessed by road in around 15 minutes.
