REVIEWED: PRO Double Wheel Bag

There might come a time when you either have a few too many wheels to trip over in your garage.

There might come a time when you either have a few too many wheels to trip over in your garage. Or, maybe you are taking a spare pair to a race. Or maybe you just want to stop that incessant rattling of loose wheels packed in the back of your car. Or maybe you’re travelling by plane and need to take your wheels separately. Hey, maybe you even want to ride to a ‘cross race and need to carry your spare wheels with you.

Whichever of these situations might match up with you, the new double sided wheel bag from PRO will suit. Wheel bags have been around for years. I remember a mate lusting over the first edition Mavic Crossmax wheels in the late 90’s, purely because they came with wheel bags. Wheel bags are pro. They are a ready made way to transport and protect the very things that make our bike function.

But it has been very hard to find ones that work well with fat tyres. The PRO model works with 29″ wheels, 650b, cyclocross, 26″ and road. I doubt a set of fat bike wheels would fit, due to the width. The circumference would be fine though.

The materials and bag itself is all pretty simple, with light padding, two separate pockets with their own zip, a small pocket for quick releases or tools, and a shoulder strap. The hub area is reinforced so it doesn’t get torn apart from the ends of your axle, cassette or rotors. The padding is fine for travel where you control the packing, but I would be removing my disc rotors and adding some closed cell foam (or even cardboard) for airline travel.

Axles and tools in here please. Axles and tools in here please.

The adjustable shoulder strap makes for easy carrying, and you could even sling it over your shoulder to carry them on a bike – useful for carrying spares from a carpark into a race venue, or just for a free hand in transit.

I’m lucky enough to have a sweet set of race wheels that I pop on for events. I don’t ride on them all the time. These wheels live in this wheel bag as it makes them neat and easy to take to races in the back of my car. Nothing gets scratched, I don’t get crap all through the back of my car, and I know my wheels are in protected.

All in all, this is a really useful bag to have, and highly versatile. best of all, it’s very well priced. If you travel with your bike, or have the need to protect some wheels – it’s worth looking into.
