Riding Beechworth Mountain Bike Park

Beechworth has long been recognised amongst the mountain bike fraternity for some time now as the perfect holiday destination

AMB Magazine 20.04.2015

With all that Beechworth has to offer, all of a sudden the thought of you spending hours on your bike on a weekend away is appealing to some MTB-reluctant partners!

The steady stream of mountainbike riders from the centre of town to the Mountain Bike Park each weekend is testament to the trails built by local legend Paul Fitzgerald and his willing team. The MTB Park is currently undergoing some trail realignment and environmental revegetation under the watchful eye of local Chaingang members Tim Chalkley and Wes Samson. The works being undertaken will see a comprehensive trail network of beginner green trails right through to highly-technical XC loops. A new jump track has just been completed and is easily accessible from the car park of Alma Rd.

The Beechworth MTB Park is located five minutes from the centre of town and provides hours of mountainbike fun, doing whatever riding you like. The town itself has a rich and colourful history, most notably as the place of incarceration for Ned Kelly. The riding around Beechworth ranges from fire trail through to tight technical XC.

For those seeking a genuine downhill experience the Mt Stanley downhill is 18km from Beechworth. This downhill track is not for the faint hearted with 730m of vertical descent over six kilometres and is widely regarded as one of the best in the country.

Getting There

Beechworth can be accessed from the Hume Freeway with many signed turnoffs shown in each direction. Once in Beechworth head down Camp Street (past the Beechworth Bakery) and turn left into High Street. You will eventually come to a fork in the road where a new dam has been constructed. Take the right hand fork up Havelock Road and about 150 meters up Havelock Road you will need to turn down Alma Road. Alma Road turns into a dirt road, and a few kilometres along you will see the Beechworth Mountain Bike Park.

Technical Rating

Recent changes to the Beechworth Mountain Bike Park have seen a green loop opened. The remaining network of XC trails range from free flowing to tight and technical. The tracks coming off the back of the park are the most technical and should only be undertaken by the most competent.

You’ll Need

Water is essential as there is none available at the park. The granite base can be unforgiving on tyres so make sure you have a few spare tubes.

Distances

The XC loop is about 7.5km and takes about 45 minutes to complete.

The added loops vary in distance but there is enough to keep you busy for a few hours.

Local Knowledge

Quite a bit is being done to make more information available. There is the local club site which has rides and maps at beechworthchaingang.com or the local cycle tourism website murraytomountains.com.au.

A mountainbike guide for Beechworth is also available for sale from the local newsagent and Visitor Information Centre.
