Sickening crash mars Under-23 men's World Championships road race
Finnish rider rushed to hospital after horror accident involving support vehicle.
Police are investigating after young Finnish rider Joni Kanerva collided with a team car at the World Championships.
Kanerva was taking part in the Under-23 men's road race when he went down heavily in a sickening crash.
The 22-year-old was unable to avoid hitting a team car which swerved into his path while overtaking another support vehicle which stopped to deal with a mechanical.
"The matter is with police, who will carry out an investigation," event press officer Toril Berle Schalck told Norway's TV2. "With an accident like this, it's a normal routine for the police to come in."
Finnish TV reported that Kanerva was unconcious immediately after the crash, but became responsive on the way to the hospital.
Team boss Kjell Carlstrom claimed his rider broke his ribs and collarbone, as well as suffering cuts to the face.
The race was won by Frenchman Benoit Cosnefroy, with Germany's Lennard Kamna second and Michael Carbel Svendgaard taking third.
Australian Callum Scotson was in the battle for the medals, but missed out in the sprint and placed 21 overall.
In the junior women's road race, Elena Pirrone won for Italy, with Emma Cecilie Norsgaard in second and Letizia Paternoster in third.
Australia's Madeleine Fasnacht finished 14th overall, 42 seconds behind the winner.
