Yesterday, it was announced that the South West of Western Australia has some big goals in sight for mountain biking. The Minister for Environment launched the South West Mountain Bike Master Plan, which has been developed by WestCycle in consultation with the Western Australia MTB Association (WAMBA), plus local clubs and riders in the community.
The rough plan is – make the South West an international destination for mountain biking. That’s no mean feat, as in Australia we already have Cairns, Derby, Mt Buller, Thredbo, Falls Creek and Alice Springs vying for international and domestic mountain bikers’ holiday time.
The plan encompasses developing a network of trails that are “innovative, high quality and cohesive”, providing great riding experiences for locals and international guests alike.
“The plan identifies Collie, Margaret River and Pemberton as priority areas for mountain bike trails, discussions are underway regarding the funding to commence the development of these sites which are largely on Department of Parks and Wildlife managed land”, Matt Fulton, CEO of WestCycle, said.
No more real details have been released – but it’s a great step to see the potential for great riding in the west capitalised upon.
